Reset Windows7 Administrator Password with "Password Reset Key"

In any case if you lose your Windows 7 administrator password, the “Password Reset Disk” will prove helpful. It helps to set a new password for Win7 and that too right on your system. However, this option is a precautionary method and one should be prepared with Password Reset Disk in order to reset administrator password at the time of crises.

The solution Shared Here is Applicable for Windows 7 & Windows Vista as Well.

First of all, we will discuss the process to create password reset disk. The procedure is simple and will require 5-10 minutes for completion.

Step 1: Go to ‘Start’ menu and then to ‘Control Panel’


Step 2: Select ‘User Accounts and Family Safety’ » User Accounts



Note: Before proceeding to next step, it is recommended to connect some removable device with the system. This is because the Password Reset Disk will get created on it. Here, we suggest you to use a pen drive or a floppy disk drive (For Windows7, external hard drive, DVD or a CD won’t work).

Step 3: In the left panel, click on ‘Create a password reset disk’


Note: If the external storage media is not connected properly, you might receive an error message as "No Drive"

Step 4: A "Forgotten Password Wizard" window will pop up. Click 'Next'


Step 5: Now, you have to select the drive that has portable drive connected. For this, chose the media drive location through drop down box of 'I want to create a Password Key disk in the following drive'. Click 'Next'

Step 6: Enter the current user account password in the text box. If there is no user password, keep the text box blank.


Step 7: Win7 will now start creating password reset disk and once the process status is 100%, click 'Next' » 'Finish'.



The resultant reset key will be saved with "Userkey.psw".



Process to Reset Windows7 Password:

So, now when you have reset password key available, you can make use of it anytime when you are unable to remember the account login password. To reset Windows 7 password, follow the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: Enter the password and when it is incorrect, Windows will display the hint password and option "Reset Password".


Step 2: Make sure the removable media with reset password key is connected with system.

Step 3: Once the media is connected, 'Password reset Wizard' window will get opened. Click 'Next'

Step 4: In the next window, the OS will automatically detect the drive with removable media. Click 'Next'

Step 5: Now enter new password for the user account. Confirm it and enter a hint password. Click 'Next'

Step 6: A message about successful password reset will appear on screen. Click 'Finish'

Now, to login to the account, enter the new password that you created and you are all set to work on the system.
