Introduction to Virtual Hard Disk (VHD & VHDX) File

What is a VHD file?

VHD stands for Virtual Hard Disk. It is a file format which signifies a virtual hard disk drive. The limitation of VHD file format is that the storage size offered by this type of file is under 2 TB. It is due to sector offset table that only allows for the maximum size of 32-bit quantity.

What is a VHDX file?

VHDX is a virtual hard disk file made on Hyper-V platform. Hyper-V is the virtual platform originated by Microsoft. The VHDX file is very beneficial for storage of heavy data. Unlike VHD files, VHDX provides higher storage capacity. The storage capacity provided by the VHDX files are having 64 TB capacity. You can use VHDX Viewer to open, read, explore & view Hyper-V virtual Hard disk Images files of Windows backup.

How to Create VHD / VHDX file?

A file from current Windows machine can be converted to VHD file. To do this, a user needs to go through the following steps:

  1. Go to Computer Management and then choose Disk Management
  2. Right click on Disk Management
  3. Click on Create VHD

  19. How to Mount a VHD / VHDX File?

Remove Corruption in VHD / VHDX Files

Conclusion

VHDX or VHD is a virtual hard disk file. Both the file types are same. The only difference is that the VHDX offers higher storage capacity as compared to VHD. How to create and mount the VHD and VHDX files are discussed. Also, the best solution to recover corrupted Virtual hard disk and VHDX files are also discussed in brief.
