The abbreviation BSOD stands for “Blue Screen of Death”. But what does that actually mean? Here is the explanation.Let us understand What exactly BSOD is.

BSOD: What’s that?

BSOD is the abbreviation for “B lue S creen o f D eath” (Blue Screen of Death) and is a system crash.
This is a Windows error message that is fatal which turns screen blue with white text and nothing goes (stop errors).
The computer then tries to restart. If this fails, the PC hangs and the screen freezes.
In that case, it usually only helps to press the off switch or disconnect and reconnect the device.
In other operating systems, the BSOD is also called ” kernel panic”.
These are not BSOD. Rather, there are several error messages shown, which are summarized under the BSOD category.

Why Does a Blue Screen Appear?

Blue screens appear when Windows detects a problem with the system. This can be both an error in the data system, as well as one in the hardware. Through the bluescreen, Windows stops all operations to avoid harming the system.

If such mistakes occurs, you often have only a few seconds to look at the blue screen. However, this is usually useful information to get to the bottom of the problem. Afterwards, the system can not resume the running Windows session, the computer must be restarted.

If the computer does not start without a blue screen showing, you must start it in a safe mode troubleshooting.

Cause for BSODs

  • The cause of the serious BSOD errors are usually errors in drivers or the associated hardware. These are either outdated, not installed properly, or not approved by Windows.
  • Faulty system configuration can also be to blame.
  • Other causes may include faulty BIOS settings, a broken registry, an overclocked process, overheated components, or missing files on the hard disk.

BSOD Error Examples:

  • 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME
  • 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE
  • 0x00000024 NTFS FILE SYSTEM
  • 0x0000007E SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED
  • Memory Management System
  • 0x0000008E KERNEL MODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED
  • 0x00000050 PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGE AREA
  • 0x000000D1 DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO
  • 0xC0000218
  • 0x000000EA THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER
  • INACCESSIBLE BOAT DEVICE .
  • PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (software or hardware error)
  • 0x0000007D INSTALL_MORE_MEMORY
  • 0x0000007E SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
  • 0x0000007F UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
  • 0x00000080 NMI_HARDWARE_FAILURE
  • 0x00000081 SPIN_LOCK_INIT_FAILURE
  • 0x00000082 DFS_FILE_SYSTEM
  • 0x00000083 OFS_FILE_SYSTEM
  • 0x00000084 RECOM_DRIVER

Why you can not do anything anymore?

If a faulty driver writes data to a memory area used by the operating system and other drivers, it will violate system integrity and threaten data loss.
For this reason, the system get immediately stopped and can no longer be operated. Although running applications can no longer be secured, this is accepted in order to avoid possibly more serious data loss elsewhere.

BSOD Error Interface:

Microsoft has changed the look of blue screens over the years.

Windows 9x

This type of BSOD in Windows 95 and 98 offered little information to detect a cause of error. Although it was offered to abort the application with any key, but that did not work normally and it was only the (forced) reboot.

Windows XP

In Windows XP, Vista, and 7, the BSODs are more helpful because they display an error number, an error name, and certain numeric values that help advanced users find out the exact cause of the error.

Windows 7

Windows 8

From Windows 8, Microsoft has revised the BSOD: It shows a sad smiley and gives little evidence. It only indicates that error information is collected and the computer needs to be restarted.

In Windows Vista, in addition to the bluescreen, there was also the Red Screen of Death for particularly serious bugs such as a bootloader error. In beta versions of Windows 8, there was also a Black Screen of Death. This was later replaced by the well-known blue again.

Most Common BSOD Error and Their Solution:

  • Windows does not start successfully: When you see the blue screen appears on your screen, restart your Windows. After restarting the Windows Go to My Computer –> Right Click on it–> Properties –>Advanced Tab –> In Startup & Recovery section Click Settings Button. Make sure that you have disabled Automatically Restart option.
  • Solution for driver issues: Simultaneously press Windows and R, then enter devmgmt.msc and click OK. Device Manager opens. In the list, locate the device whose driver was recently installed or modified, and right-click on it. Click on “Update driver software” and follow the instructions. Alternatively, you can uninstall the driver in the same way and then download and install the latest from the manufacturer’s website.
  • 0x0000002E: DATA_BUS_ERROR: If this error appears on the blue screen, there is a problem with memory.
  • 0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE: There is an error in the boot sector. Check your computer for the time being for a virus attack. Anti-virus programs usually also have a feature that allows you to check only the boot sectors. If you can not find these, do a complete scan of the computer. If the problem is not caused by a virus, open the BIOS , locate the “SATA Mode Selection” item and set “IDE” instead of “AHCI”. Alternatively, you can manually repair the boot sector.
  • 0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM: In this case, a program occupies a noticeable amount of CPU memory. Open the task manager by simultaneously pressing the keys “Ctrl” + “Shift” + “Esc”. Now look for the process that occupies more than 50% in the “CPU” column. If it is a program, uninstall and reinstall it. If it is part of Windows (system), press the “Windows” and “E” keys at the same time so that the computer opens. Right-click on the hard disk on which Windows is installed (usually “C”) and select the “Properties”. Click the Tools tab at the top and click Review. Now errors are searched in the system and if necessary
  • System Restore: If none of this is helpful, we recommend restoring or repairing the computer. How this works for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

These are some common issues with possible solution which user faces when blue screen appears on the screen. If your problem is not get resolved you can get help from Microsoft.
