How to Troubleshoot Exchange 2013 Content Index Error Code 20, 1, 19, 2?

In the daily routine, Exchange server administrator might be facing several issues. Out of which, one such error is “Exchange Database Content Index State”. The main use of Content Index is that it will try to search Mailbox content in Outlook and Outlook Web Access (OWA). Thus, sometimes there might be a chance of database Failover and Switchover. When both Automatic Switchover or Failover operation takes place, then you should check Exchange Content Index State. Therefore, in the following section, we will discuss a step-by-step procedure in order to fix the Exchange 2013 Content Index Error Code 20/ 1/ 19/ 2. Before that, let us consider some important points that you must keep in mind before executing the manual process.

Prerequisites Before You Begin

  • First, you have to check the Content Index using the following command:

How to Troubleshoot Content Index State Exchange 2013?

There are following steps by which you can resolve Exchange 2013 content index error code 20/ 1/ 19/ 2. Let us have a look:

Note: To repair the content index first you need to stop the search services on Exchange server. This may impact searches for some healthy databases, and rebuilding process will create the significant load on the server, so you have to perform these steps in normal business hours.

1. First of all, stop the below services:

  • Microsoft Exchange Search Host Controller

  • Microsoft Exchange Search

2. Then, identify the Database to Remove, Rename, or Moving the Content Index ‘Catalog Folder’

If you do not know the database Path (EDB File Path) then, run the below mentioned command. It will show the path of EDB File

3. Select the folder and now, you can either rename, delete or move ‘Catalog Folder or Guid’ to another location. For example, You have renamed a specific folder to “Guid.old”.

4. Next, you have to restart both the services as given below:

5. Once you begin the service check the status of Content Index for databases which are ‘Failed or FailedAndSuspended’ by executing the below command:

6. After that, this will go to an Unknown state

7. Now, the status of Content Index will be modified from an Unknown state to the Crawling as shown below screenshot:

8. Eventually, the status of Content Index will be modified from Crawling to a healthy state

9. Both databases can be changed to healthy State from Crawling as displayed below:

If this Server becomes a member of DAG, then execute the below command:

If you have a large number of databases and Content Index comes in this “Failed or FailedAndSuspended” State, then run the following command:
