GUID Partition Table (GPT) is a standard for partition table layout on a physical storage device used in a computer or server PC. For instance, a solid state drive or hard disk drive uses globally unique identifiers (GUID).

Sometimes users encounter a condition when the GPT HDD does not recognize in Windows 7. But, displays in BIOS and Windows Manager and the GPT partition shows as unallocated space. If you are also stuck in the same scenario then, don’t be alarmed, this article is meant just for you. Here, we will give you the answer of your question i.e., can Windows 7 read GUID partition table?

can windows 7 read gpt disk

Problem: Windows 7 is Not Reading GUID Partition Table

Along with time, the storage requirements are also growing up from a few MB to millions of TB. As a result, hard disk size also increased to fulfil the storage requirements. Now, the system administrators are facing issues with the legacy MBR partitioning scheme. Hence, it is essential to understand that how Windows Server OS supports the GPT scheme so that, your Windows 7 can read GUID Partition Table (GPT Disk).

Due to several data-integrity limitations of Master Boot Record partitioning scheme users are inclining towards the new standard GUID Partition Table scheme i.e GPT.

If you have lost your files from computer and looking for solution. Then try this Windows Data Recovery Software and secure your all files. It supports GPT partition and compatible with all Windows versions.

Where’s The Issue?

GUID is a part of UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) standard. It is also utilized on some BIOS systems due to limitations of MBR (Master Boot Record) partition tables that uses 32 bits to store LBS (Logical Block Address) and size information on a 512-byte disk sector. GPT based disks end the 4 primary partition limit of MBR disk. Using GPT, one can create maximum 128 primary partitions (Windows limit, not GPT limit). The GPT uses 64-bit disk pointers that permit a maximum disk partition size of 9.4 Zeta bytes or 9.4 billion TeraBytes. In order to read the GUID partition table on Windows 7, the following system requirements must be fulfilled:

  • First of all, users cannot install the Windows 7 (32 bit) on GPT partition style.
  • All the versions can utilize GPT partitioned disk for the data. Booting is only supported for the 64-bit editions on EFI/UEFI-based system.
  • Another thing your computer and OS should support the UEFI/EFI mode or the Legacy BIOS-compatibility mode.
  • Make the selected disk compatible with Windows 7, viz, change from the GPT partition style to MBR.

Several Users Query ‘Can Windows 7 Read GUID Partition Table?’

Frank’s Query: “Recently, I got a new SSHD and replaced it with the previous HDD. I did a fresh installation of Windows 7 Enterprise and found everything running as it expected. I went to go pull my old Docs, Images, Music etc., off from the old HDD and when I loaded the disk with drive bay, nothing showed up. Then, I went into Disk Management to check if it was there. It was. But, when I clicked on it, wizard popped up that says GUID or MBR. Well, I am new to Enterprise real realm of things so I want to ask if I will choose GUID then, will I be able to read GUID Partition Table?”

Alvin’s Query: “Since a long time, I am using Windows 7 computer with the 500GB hard drive. Recently, I added a hard disk drive as a second drive to store the data and configured a new WD HDD on my new Windows 10 computer as the GPT partition style. But, whenever I am attempting to connect this HDD to Windows 7 computer, it can not be recognized in the Windows Explorer. Due to which I can not access any information on the GPT hard drive. After opening the Disk Management, I found that it just one partition displayed as unallocated space, when I try to assign a drive letter to it in the Disk Management, the option greyed out. Hence, here is my question: why GPT partition not recognized in Windows 7 and how to read GPT partition in Windows 7?”

Time to Conclude

This article comprises complete information about why GPT HDD does not recognize in Windows Explorer yet, it displays in BIOS and Windows Disk Management. Here, we have tried to give the answer of ‘ can Windows 7 read GUID Partition Table’ in a simple manner so that end users can understand the actual problem and overcome it via given tips.
