the blue screen of death

Have you ever been in a situation where you were working peacefully on your computer and then, in a blink of an eye, the screen has turned blue, the work has stopped and you are no longer the master of your own computer? Yeah, that’s the Blue Screen of Death also known as the Blue Screen Error. An error that has been a horror to the computer users. So what actually is this error and how does it affect the users?

This error signifies that the operating system has reached a critical condition and will not operate on the desktop. It is a serious error in Windows computers that freezes the system restricting it from working any further. There can be multiple reasons for this error to occur like hardware issues or software issues.

Now the question arises how to resolve this issue and what are the prevention measures a user can take to save their computers and their data from the Blue Screen Error. To help the users we bring this article today with all the key details about the error. Let us first start by understanding a little more about the issue.

What is the Blue Screen of Death?

This error occurs with a blue screen with white text over it notifying the user that something is wrong with the system that it can not recover from. The error mainly shows that the Windows has crashed due to some critical issue. The reasons for the Windows crash are not certain. It can be anything from a hardware issue to a software issue.

When the system detects any such errors, it immediately stops all the functions to avoid any damages.

When the Blue Screen Error (also known as the Stop Error) occurs it mostly displays the error code or error message that can help the user to identify the issue. But not every user has a technical knowledge that deep to understand the codes or messages, some users may face problems while understanding the technical causes of the error.

The most common way of dealing with this error is to restart the computer and check if they still are facing the issue. If the user has been facing frequent issues regarding the Stop error, it is necessary for the user to understand and diagnose the root problem.

The Blue Screen of Death can be scary for the users but there are many ways to prevent it and save your computer from any further damage. But to prevent the issue, we must know what can be the reasons causing this error. Let’s figure out.

Why Does the Stop Error Occur?

As we discussed earlier, there is not any certain reason for the error to occur. There can be multiple factors responsible for this issue. We will now discuss the reasons and factors to how the issue occurs.

Hardware issues

Hardware issues can be a primary cause of the Windows’ Blue Screen Of Death. Any problem within the hardware may somehow lead to the system’s instability or even system crash which may end up resulting in the Stop Error.

  • A faulty RAM can cause data corruption resulting in frequent system crashes.
  • Any mechanical failure or bad sectors in a hard drive can also lead to the Blue screen errors.
  • A corrupted drive or old drive can also lead to system crashes and instability.
  • Even overheating of the system components can result in a system crash.

Issues within the software

Like hardware issues, few issues within the software can also lead to the occurrence of the Stop Error. Let’s take a look at some of the common software issues that lead to the blue screen of death.

  • Some software update faults can also lead to system instability by causing compatibility issues and introducing bugs within the system.
  • The malware or virus attacks can also damage the software and corrupt the files in the system leading to a system crash or the Blue Screen Error.

BIOS issues

Sometimes an incorrect or misconfigured BIOS can also lead to the system crash as they create conflicts between the hardware components of the system and the operating system. The conflict caused due to the BIOS triggers the crucial errors and ends up resulting in the blue screen to avoid any further damage.

Did you know?

In July 2024, the world witnessed the largest outage of the Blue Screen of Death error on the Windows systems worldwide. Approximately 8.5 million devices were affected due to this outage. The outage was started because of a faulty update that was distributed by an American cybersecurity company.  This faulty update led to system crashes in many sectors resulting in delay or cancellation of flights, delay in medical services and even in the banking field it disrupted the services.

How to Fix the Blue Screen of Death?

The major step in resolving the error is to diagnose the root cause of the issue. Whenever this error occurs, it mostly displays the error code or the error message. So by examining those codes we can figure out and resolve the issue causing the error. After knowing the error cause, the following steps will help you to resolve and fix the Blue Screen Error in Windows.

  •  Shut down the computer

When the system has already crashed, there is nothing more you can do except by restarting it. To shut down the computer, all you have to do is to force shut down your computer by pressing and holding the power button.

  •  Disconnect all the devices from the computer

There may be chances that the system crashed due to any plugged in USB or any other device. So before moving any further, disconnect and remove all the devices from the computer(except the mouse and the keyboard).

  • Reboot your computer in the safe mode

If the windows starts without any issues, enter the safe mode as it allows the user to perform any essential tasks. You can enter the safe mode from the sign in screen or by the settings option.

    • Using sign in screen:
    1. Press the shift key and while holding the shift key click on the power button and select the restart option from the list.
    2. You will be provided with a choose an option screen.
    3. From the given options choose troubleshoot, then click on advanced options, then click on the startup settings.
    4. You will see multiple options, click on restart. Your computer will restart with a list of options.
    5. Choose safe mode by pressing 4 or F4 for Safe Mode or press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
    • Using settings:
    1. Press the Windows key from your keyboard. Go to settings, then choose system from the list.
    2. Go to recovery and from recovery options click on restart now under the advance startup.
    3. Your computer will restart and the choose an option window will appear again.
    4. Select troubleshoot, then select advanced options, and then click on startup settings.
    5. Click restart again with a list of options.
      1. Select 4 or F4 for Safe Mode.
      2. Select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
  •  Uninstall any recently installed software

Once you enter the safe mode, you can scan for the issues. Even a recently installed software can lead to a system crash. So to ensure that any newly installed software doesn’t do any more damage, we can just uninstall that software from the computer.

To uninstall a software in Windows:

  1. Press the window button on your keyboard.
  2. Search for add or remove programs in the search bar.
  3. A list of all the applications in the device will show up. Select the application that was recently installed( or the application that you no longer need). Then click on the application name and select the uninstall option.
  •  Disable the drivers

Not only the software, but sometimes the updates in drivers can also become a reason for the Blue Screen Error. Sometimes there can be bugs or glitches present in the updates that may end up leading to the error. To rollback the recent update or disable the driver, a user has to follow the given steps:

  1. Press the Windows key from the keyboard.
  2. Go to system settings, and look for the device manager.
  3. A list with all the hardware components of your device will appear.
  4. Right click on properties on each one to figure out which component was updated recently.
  5. In the selected driver’s property, click on the Driver tab and select the RollBack Driver option.
  •  Check your computer for any malware

There are high chances that a malware or virus attack corrupted the files and that led to a system crash. To ensure that your computer has any malwares or not, you need to scan your computer for any potential malwares. Additionally to protect your computer from any further attacks, you will need to use an antivirus or any malware removal tool.

  •  Check for system file and hard drive damage

To check for any damage within the system files or hard drives, a user is required to perform these two scans. The SFC scan for the System File Checker and the CHKDSK command to check the drives.

    • To perform the SFC scan, you need to follow these steps:
    1. Press Windows key + R and then type CMD in the search bar.
    2. Click on Run as Administrator. Then click on ok or yes, as per the option shows up.
    3. In the CMD dialog box, type sfc /scannow and press enter. The scan will start and will make any repairs if needed, on its own.
    • Now for the hard drive scanning. The steps are:
    1. Press Windows key + R, and type CMD in the text area of the dialog box.
    2. Select run as administrator, then click on yes or ok
    3. In the CMD window, type CHKDSK /r and press enter. The scan will be initiated and will do the repairs on its own.

  •  Restart your computer

After completing all these scans and inspections for any error or possible reason for the Blue Screen Error, exit the Safe Mode and continue the task that led to the Stop error. If the device reboots without any error message or code, most likely the issue has been resolved. You can now reinstall the software and the drivers you uninstalled.

  •  Reinstall windows on your computer

Even after completing all these steps, if the blue screen is still there on your computer, the last solution is to reinstall a clean Windows version. Reinstalling the window will wipe out all the data from your computer including the files and user data and everything.

But before reinstalling a new Window, make sure to back up all your data on an external hard drive so it doesn’t get wiped out during the reinstallation of the Windows.

In case of system crash, you can use a Data Recovery Software that will help you to recover and back up your data to a new drive.
