Mail app is the default email client of Mac OS and is commonly called Mac Mail or Apple Mail. It has a built-in option to export contacts or emails. However, the format in which they are exported is fixed and cannot be changed. So, for those who wish to get their data in specific file formats have to use certain tips and tricks to get what they want.

In this article, we will provide the simple method export Mac Mail to CSV file. Whether its contacts or emails, you can get them in CSV file, obviously in separate CSVs.

So, let us start with the contacts first & then we will explain the process for emails later.

Export Contacts from Mac Mail to CSV File

1. Open the Contacts app on your Mac.

2. Choose the contact list that you wish to export, such as All Contacts.

3. Now, go to File menu, click on Export and then select Export vCard option.

4. Give a name to the files to be exported and choose location to save the files.

5. Click the Save button.

This will save the contacts in vCard/VCF format. You will now need a separate medium to convert the exported files into CSV format. You can use our VCF to CSV converter for ease or opt for an online converter to save money. It’s your choice.

Note: Some people, albeit a minority, actually copy the contacts from the Contact list and paste them into an Excel sheet. Thereafter saving the Excel sheet in CSV format. This can also be considered a trick to directly get the CSV file if you have the time.

Export Emails from Mac Mail to CSV

Let us get this fact out of the way before we continue – Unlike contacts there are tricks here to get your emails directly in a CSV file. The only export format available is MBOX and it cannot be changed to CSV.

So, here we will have to export emails from Mac Mail and then convert them into CSV file. The two-step process is explained below:

Step 1 – Export Emails from Mac Mail

  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Select a single, multiple or all mailboxes you want to save in CSV file.
  3. After selecting, go to Mailbox menu and select Export Mailbox.
  4. Select a folder to save the file and click Choose.

The files are created in .mbox format. Now, we will convert them into CSV in the next step.

Step 2 – Convert Exported Mailboxes to CSV on Mac
